Is it a weed or a plant?

I made the mistake of planting mixed "perennial garden" and "daisy garden" seed packs in an area that I cleared out this winter. Most weeds (I think) I have been able to identify, and I am faithfully watering and caring for the remaining plants. However, there is one that I am afraid may be a weed, it's growing fairly large, right now it's about 15". The stem has narrow vertical 'ridges' on it , I counted five around. The leaves are fairly large, about 4-5". I scanned a leaf, how do I post a picture? If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it!

Is it a weed or a plant?
A weed is a plant that is growing someplace it is not wanted. Even that arch weed dandelion is planted by some people who want it as a salad green.





If you are happy with it where it is, call it a plant and don't remove it. Growing fairly large is a bad sign in terms of conventional "weed." So are shallow roots and aggressive spreading. Keep an eye on it.





With a picture, an id is simple. Without one, it is tough.

Reply:A weed or plant? The answer to that would be up to you. Wal-mart %26amp; nearseies sell all kinds of stuff that I call weeds in my yard. Some of the weeds that grow freely in me yard look very nice but thay grow where I keep the grass cut %26amp; I only get to see them bloom about the time to cut the grass again.





I have even seen Nerow Dock, Honey Suckel, %26amp; other very agresive weeds sold.





I myself have wild Rasberry %26amp; Blackberrys all over my new yard %26amp; it is about to drive me crazzy.





I knew one guy that had a yard full of weeds %26amp; not much grass %26amp; he said he liked them. Saying, "If it wasn't for my weeds I would have nothing green in my yard." He was right about not haveing anything green.





I know this dosn't help with idenfing your plant but I hope it gives you a new outlook on weeds or plants.

Reply:the rule of thumb ............is a plant is what you want to keep, a weed is one you DON'T want..........period
Reply:A weed is just a plant out of place. A flower is a weed if you don't like it. :)





I am sorry I don't recognize the leaf, ut it looks interesting. My first thought was hollyhock, but I don't think that is it.





Why don't you transplant it to the back so if it gets really hugs it isn't shading ou other plants and see what happens. It may grow to be a 6' double blooming whatchamacallit and be the 'prize' plant in your garden. :)
Reply:Hey if it is pretty and green who cares? If it begins to choke out the others- then is the time to "weed" the weed.
