Sounds like a tulip poplar. No kidding.
Reply:It sounds like it is exactly that, A tulip tree, they are many different types, Also the magnolia tree has tulip like flowers, and again there are many different types, They both bloom in the spring, The only thing that throws me off is the ridges on the leaves, Magnolia trees have very big leaves and are smooth on the edges, Tulip trees have leaves that are shaped in threes,
Reply:It is probably either a magnolia or a tuliptree. I enclosed a site showing a tuliptree in bloom. Someone already has provided a picture of a magnolia.
Reply:Depending on where you live, I would bet on a Japanese Magnolia

It comes in several colors from off white to pink to purple. Check it out.

Reply:Could be a magnolia, we have one next door to us it`s flowers are white with pink tips, when it`s in full flower, it looks very pretty.
Reply:it sounds like a magnola but the leaves should still be in bud as the flowers come first
Reply:Tulip poplar was my first thought too
